Tis' the Season to be SCAMMED!
Tis' the time of the year that you may get an automated call with a robotic voice on the other end stating you “OWE THE IRS” money. No one wants to owe the IRS money, so your initial instinct may be to payoff any debt owed immediately. That is exactly what these scammers are hoping for, they are praying on those that want to react immediately.
If you have not gotten this call consider yourself lucky. However, be aware because the call will surely come.
Here are a few steps and reminders to help avoid being scammed:
The IRS does not call! They send out certified letters to you.
Do NOT give your information to anyone whom you do not know.
Never provide your information to anyone in response to something that was unsolicited.
Do not click on emails you do not know whom they are from.
Be aware of phishing scams.
Calls and solicitations telling you money must be paid ASAP.
Emails with questionable links.
Emails stating to send money.
Safeguard your social security number and other confidential information.
Shred your trash with anything confidential on it.
Also be sure to put your outgoing mail in the post office box instead of your personal mailbox as it is easy for someone to grab it and open.
If you think a call may be legit always VERIFY and be DILIGENT before responding.
These fraudsters are getting more and more savvy trying to trick the other person on the other end of the line.

Another thing to do is to periodically check your credit report. You are allowed 3 free reports each year. You may be unaware if your identity has already been breached. Visit www.annualcreditreport.com to check your credit and make sure nothing is suspicious.
